IPL Treatment
Broad-Spectrum Light. Targeted Results. Skin That Looks Like Itself Again.
Sun damage has a way of accumulating quietly over the years until one day you look in the mirror and the spots, redness, and uneven tone are impossible to ignore. IPL treatment, also known as a photofacial, is one of the most effective non-invasive ways to turn that around. At Elan Med Spa, we use advanced Intense Pulsed Light technology to address the discoloration, broken capillaries, and textural concerns that make skin look older and more tired than it should.
What makes IPL different from a single-wavelength laser is its ability to emit multiple wavelengths of light simultaneously, allowing us to target both pigment and blood vessels in the same treatment. It is a versatile, well-tolerated option for clients who want meaningful skin improvement without the recovery time associated with more intensive resurfacing treatments.
Benefits of IPL Treatment
- Fades sun spots, age spots, and areas of uneven pigmentation
- Reduces facial redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea-related flushing
- Softens fine lines and improves overall skin texture
- Stimulates new collagen and elastin production for firmer, healthier skin
- Minimal downtime with results that build progressively over a treatment series
- Safe and effective for the face, neck, chest, and hands
What Is IPL Treatment?

How Intense Pulsed Light Works
IPL devices deliver controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light energy into the skin. Unlike a laser that targets one specific depth or concern, IPL emits multiple wavelengths simultaneously, allowing it to address both melanin, the pigment responsible for brown spots and sun damage, and hemoglobin, the compound in blood vessels that causes redness and visible capillaries. The light energy heats and breaks down these targeted cells, which the body then naturally absorbs and clears over the following days. At the same time, the treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers of the skin, contributing to improved firmness and texture over time.

What IPL Can Treat
IPL is one of the more versatile skin treatments we offer because of how many different concerns it can address in a single session. Most commonly we use it to treat sun damage and age spots, facial redness and rosacea, broken capillaries and spider veins, uneven skin tone, and general skin dullness. It can also be effective for mild textural concerns and enlarged pores. During your consultation, your provider will assess your skin and confirm whether IPL is the right fit for the specific changes you want to address.

What the Treatment Experience Is Like
Each IPL session at Elan Med Spa takes approximately twenty to thirty minutes. A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area before the handpiece is positioned against the skin and light pulses are delivered. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild stinging, similar to the snap of a small rubber band. Protective eyewear is worn throughout the session to shield your eyes from the light. A topical numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment to further minimize any discomfort.
What to Expect After Your IPL Treatment
IPL is one of the more straightforward treatments in terms of recovery. Most clients experience mild redness or slight swelling for a few hours to a day following their session, and many return to their normal activities the same day. Makeup can be applied immediately if needed.
One thing worth knowing: treated brown spots may temporarily look darker in the days following your session before forming small surface crusts that peel away naturally within seven to ten days. This is a completely normal part of the process and a sign that the treatment is working.
- Avoid sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF daily following treatment
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer for approximately one week post-treatment
- Avoid tanning the treatment area before your appointment
- Most clients complete an initial series of three to six sessions spaced about four weeks apart, followed by one to two maintenance treatments per year
